Alopecia areata is an auto-immune condition, where there is a sudden, localised and complete hairloss. It most commonly affects the scalp, but can also affect beard, eyebrows and eyelashes. There can be a spontaneous regrowth of hair also, but sometimes the hairloss is long-standing.
Alopecia areata has various morphologies; it can be present in few patches, but can also involve large areas of frontal aspect, or the back of scalp.

The symptoms of alopecia areata can vary from person to person, but the most common symptoms include:
- Localised hairloss
- Sudden hair loss
- Lack of itching, flaking or redness <
- Involvement of scalp, beard, eyebrows, rarely eyelashes and other hair-bearing areas

- Do not use home remedies, like applying garlic/ onion paste
- Do not use steroids unsupervised
